Xan’s Favorites

Xan doesn’t spend all her time unleashing evil. Sometimes she relaxes, too . . .

What’s Xan’’s favorite book, movie, and/or song?

“Black Magic Woman” has to be her favorite song, sexy and sultry, just like her. Book, maybe “The Feminine Mystique” or for fun anything by Shirley Jackson just so she can criticize the amateurs.

I think she’d enjoy watching Prizzi’s Honor, reveling in the dark humor but mostly in how Anjelica Huston’s Maerose engineered events to get Charley back, probably something Xan wished she could have done with Elric.

Perhaps Auntie Mame? (Not that she is an Auntie Mame-rather the opposite, but I can see her thinking that she is.)

She can’t get enough of Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked” (Both the book and the play based on it). But she also enjoys biographies of strong women. Her favorites are about Hatchepsut, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Agrippina.

“Evil Woman” seems like it would be her theme song. I think Xan likes the blues and jazz–deep, sultry, smokey music. The kind you listen to in the corner booth of a little bar in downtown Chicago while sipping a glass of red wine. The kind of music that lives deep in your soul even after you go home for the evening.

As for movies I’m leaning toward classics, especially “The Two Faces of Eve”. She appreciates the simplicity of black and white film, the pureness of it. And for reading I think she is a closet romance fan–why else would she have gone to the trouble to find her neices’ One True Love?! She probably also watches daytime soaps–Erica Kane is her hero…

Her favorite TV show is Charmed. She, of course, cheers for the demons.

Xan enjoys the writings of Jackie Collins and former GE CEO Jack Welch (although her admiration for him wars with her wish to turn him into a gnat as punishment for trading in his wife for a younger model).

She’s also a big fan of The Smiths’ song “How Soon is Now,” since unless you’re paying very close attention all you hear is a lot of edgy, vaguely dangerous music and the tagline, “I’m only human, I need to be loved just like everybody else does.” The combination of drama and self-justification really float her boat.

Song - Magic Man, by Heart.
Book - Any kind of book where the BAD guy triumphs in the end, and not the good guy. She’d get a kick out of that.
Movie - hmmmmm … Fatal Attraction. Yep.

Xan’s favorite song — “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” by REM. How could she resist a song about the end of the world-she’d imagine hereself causing it.

Her favorite book — “Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth” by Peter Kelder and Bernie S. Siegel. She can’t resist the thought of tips to be younger, and more powerful.

Her favorite movie — “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. She identifies very well with the Queen, who was a witch, trying to ensure that she is the fairest one of all.
