Mare’s favorite Broadway production is Spamalot- it puts a smile on her face everytime. So even though most of the time she loves Salem Fork the way it is (with Value Video!! as it’s media center), she’s willing to travel far to see the show.
When she’s staying in her town, though, one of her favorite movies to watch on dark, cloudy days is Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp because she revels in how much humor Tim Burton brings to the story of the headless horseman.

I think Mare likes something kind of alternative, hopeful, yet gothic - maybe Cocteau Twins and “Fotzeopolitic” - or some good Eurotrash type bands - maybe Depeche Mode and “Enjoy the Silence” but then I can see her turning over the record and listening to some classic Steve Miller Band “Dance Dance Dance” or Clapton’s “Layla.”
Movie? She tells us herself; it’s “The Princess Bride.” Why DOES anyone every quote any other movie?

Her favorite movie, after The Princess Bride of course, is Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra. The original Queen of the Universe. And her song might be JoDee Mesina’s “My Give a Damn’s Busted.”

On Braodway, I kind of think that Mare might be a Hairspray girl.

I think as a kid she played Xena, Warrior Princess and had her own sword. Today she sings along to Pink and runs to the Foo Fighters and the Tomb Raider movie soundtrack. Of course, her favorite movie could only be The Princess Bride, but in her head Buttercup gets a sword too.

Mare’s song is “I Will Survive.” She’s Queen of the Universe after all. Whatever life throws at her, she will overcome. She survived Crash’s leaving; it broke her heart, but she survived. Of course, now they are back together because it’s True Love. But she didn’t make it so easy for Crash, did she?

In addition to Princess Bride, Mare also loves Beetlejuice. Great, cheesy movie of ghosts and the afterlife. And goth-ish Winona Ryder.
I’m not sure Mare reads a whole lot, but she is addicted to the Harry Potter books and is anxiously awaiting the book 7 release next weekend. She’ll be going to a midnight book party at an independent bookseller for sure.
I think she would particularly enjoy “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and of course the classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Probably has midnight showings and participates with the audience (toast, anyone?!) and has contests for the Best Dressed…. Music would be eclectic–a little this, a little that. Some punk, a little speed metal, blues, alternative, good old rock and roll. She just picks the music for the way it makes her feel, not because it is anything in particular. And I think if she reads she would lean towards Stephen King just for the thrill.

Book: “My Date with Satan” by Stacey Richter (A collection of wonderful, wonderful short stories, including ones about a “hello kitty” loving goth girl who steals her blind date’s autistic baby sister, a death metal rocker who unexpectedly breaks into easy listening ditties, and much much more)
Movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s beautiful and trippy and reinforces the idea that every love, no matter how messed up and painful it becomes, is worth remembering, whether you can recapture it or not.
Song: “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (also the Johnny Cash cover) Considering her age, she’d be more likely to have discovered the song from Johnny Cash’s American Recordings III cover then Tom Petty’s original, but I can see it capturing her personal ethic very nicely.

I think I may be having commenting remorse. The iPod is a tempting mistress. Am thinking Mare’s 2nd favorite song would be “I Want It to Write” by the Gossip.

In addition to The Princess Bride, Mare also likes the movie Lara Croft movies. Her favorite music, besides Kim Richey’s songs, comes from the group Evanescence.
In the back story, Mare’s favorite writer was Shirley Jackson; she loves The Haunting of Hill House, but she really relates to We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and she loved Raising Demons because it made her laugh.
Mare’s favorite singer is Kim Richey–”To look at me, you probably think I’m doing fine/Good thing you can’t read my mind.” But she’s a big Chicks fan, too, and loves Roseanne Cash. Basically, she’s a romantic.
Movies? Mare loves movies. She watches just about anything, but her fave is probably Curse of the Were Rabbit. Or The Corpse Bride (and The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sleepy Hollow; she’s a Tim Burton groupie). Or Beetlejuice. Or Howl’s Moving Castle. Or Monkeybone. Definitely Rocky Horror (when she wants to annoy Dee, she says, “Damn it, Janet!”). Plus she loves The Emperor’s New Groove because Yzma reminds her of a close relative . . .
