Dee’s Contest: What If You Had Dee’s Magic?

First of all:
YAY! THE BOOK IS OUT ON TUESDAY!
Thank you.

And to celebrate we’re going to be running four contests here in the next four weeks (plus the contest over on CherryForums during the bookclub). This week, Dee is giving away a framed needlepoint of butterflies (Eileen needlepoints and you know what an artist Dee is) plus a signed copy of The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes.

All you have to do is answer the questions, we’ll choose somebody at random from the comments between June 25 and July 1, and the winner will have a Miss Fortunes needlepoint and a book signed by all of us. We’ll post the winner here, so check back to see who won.

And your question is:

What would you do if you had Dee’s power?

    Jenny-
You are MEAN. Because here, in the world where I live, the people at Borders actually ARGUED with me when I tried to explain that “YES, the book is SUPPOSED to be out, it is OK to sell it to me today, because I READ IT on the author’s blog.”
Then they showed me the laydown date. Then they showed me the calendar. Then they explained that they really didn’t care what I read where, they were not selling me that book until tomorrow. (Which I already knew, because remember? I was in there FOUR times last week, trying to get a copy. The manager actually asked me not to try to bribe her staff!)

Anyhow, I *am* “dee”, and I love my powers! I am an oldest sister and a mom of six and a reader and a writer, and I can make dirty dishes disappear with the wave of my hand. But to have Dee Fortune’s powers?
I’d turn into a butterfly and flap my wings a LOT, then wait to see what kind of tidal waves I caused in Japan. Ok, maybe that’s a bit much. But I like the idea of changing shapes, and I’d just do it all the time. Even in bed. I think it would freak my husband right the hell out! ;)

  2. Jamie H June 25th, 2007 9:30 am

Well since I don’t have Dee’s artistic abilities to use my experience in animal form as inspiration for my artwork, I’ll go with the very practical changing into a small animal to escape unpleasant situations (boring lectures, being taken hostage, etc.)

  3. Sheryl June 25th, 2007 10:03 am

I truly feel like I’m channeling OH here :-) but if I had Dee’s powers, I’d lead all the animals in an escape down at the SPCA.

  4. Louis June 25th, 2007 10:04 am

    WOW…if I could have Dee’s power….

    I’d change…what would I change into?

Maybe a Roadrunner…and run around the world.

    Maybe a bird…and poop on selected persons….hehe.

Maybe a what?….there are so many possibilities that I just can’t pick one…..I’ll have to think about that.

  5. Jenny Crusie June 25th, 2007 10:21 am

    I got the date wrong?
    YAY! It’s out on TUESDAY!!
(I fixed it in the post.)

    Whoops.

  6. K.L. June 25th, 2007 10:44 am

If I had Dee’s power, I would change into a man at least once just to see what it felt like from the other side.

  7. Mary the CB June 25th, 2007 10:44 am

Sounds like Xan has been playing tricks on you, switching the dates around like that. See what happens when you piss of a witch?

  8. Mary the CB June 25th, 2007 10:45 am

Plus, she makes me type things like that typo. Argh.

  9. Elissa June 25th, 2007 11:09 am

If I had Dee’s power I would change into a cat so I could laze around all day like a princess. Then probably an albatross, because they can fly so high and so far. And probably, if possible, change into some sort of leader of a nation and change environmental policy to help the environment for a change instead of filling politicians pockets.

    Tee-hee hee!

  10. Cary June 25th, 2007 11:18 am

I’d change into a dog. And then eavesdrop on my pets. And the neighbors’ pets. And rich people’s pets. Then I’d set myself up as a pet psychic and make tons of money telling people why their Wolfie always barks and lunges at strangers. And why their JRT is always causing chaos whereever he goes…

  11. Julie June 25th, 2007 11:46 am

Okay, I have to read this book just for the following line:

“this man suddenly made her feel like a nun peering out the convent gate, longing for what she could never have.”

Sigh. I’ve never, ever been there — have I? LOL!

  12. Lou June 25th, 2007 12:56 pm

If I had Dee’s powers, I would become a fly so that I could be that proverbial “fly on the wall.” Think of all the things I could learn!!

  13. Jessica June 25th, 2007 2:33 pm

If I had Dee’s magic, I’d definitely turn into a butterfly. At first, I thought I’d like to be a bird, with the ability to fly wherever I wanted to. With a butterfly, though, you’re a little more subject to the whims of wind currents and such. It would keep things interesting… I’d be able to travel all over, but still be surprised now and then about where I ended up. I would be graceful, for once, which is a bonus…

  14. Diane L. June 25th, 2007 3:01 pm

“What would you do if you had Dee’s power?”

Turn into Wolfie, of course. Then I could read all the Crusie stuff as it is being written. I’d get to see ALL of the cut out stuff and not have to wait for laydown dates. :)

  15. Theresa June 25th, 2007 4:41 pm

Well, it’s been said already, but I’d probably spend quite a bit of time as a cat, lying in a warm spot of sun. Or on laundry fresh from the dryer. I like a lot of the other suggestions folks have, but I’m just not that ambitious.

  16. Shoshana June 25th, 2007 5:12 pm

I’d wander down to the state zoo and turn into something small, slip between the bars, turn into an extra whatever-animal-that-exhibit-contained, and see how long it took to be noticed! Hee hee hee!
Er, no, I wouldn’t. That would be bad. It might lead to discovery. Bah.
Mmmmmm, can’t you just SEE the expressions of bafflement, though?!
I’d actually stick with my own form most of the time, I think, except I’d probably have majored in biology, not business, and I’d be constantly researching animal species that no one knew much about, and I’d probably spend time in the form of whatever it was I was looking into this time.

Of course, this is assuming I have Dee’s powers WITHOUT Dee’s problems…. Xan is one scary lady.

  17. patmc June 25th, 2007 6:48 pm

actually i think i would change into a thin me, to see what i would look like! course, then i would wanna stay that way, which would mean a diet that would work, cause i would know what all the shouting is about being thin.

then again, if i could just change when i needed to….

  18. MJ June 25th, 2007 7:08 pm

I would definently change into a bird first. I’ve had a flying dream a few times that was so real I woke up with a feeling of loss that it was over. Then, because I’m terribly curious, I would change into a mouse to listen in on interesting conversations.

  19. Ez June 25th, 2007 8:41 pm

Well, I don’t actually know what Dee’s power is, having never read the book. When’s it due to be released in Australia?

    Have a lovely day! :-)

  20. robena grant June 25th, 2007 8:54 pm

I think I’d turn into a dog so I could learn what it is to give and receive unconditional love. I’d have doggy confidence, enough to ask for what I need, be it belly rub or a second cookie.

  21. kim h June 25th, 2007 9:24 pm

    i say a horse.

  22. Jenny Crusie June 25th, 2007 10:38 pm

It’s supposed to be out in Australia/NZ, I think, by the time I get there early in August. I’m not sure if PanMac is doing it there or not.
    I know, I’m a huge help.

  23. Mary the CB June 25th, 2007 10:53 pm

Jenny you ARE a huge help! There are few enough good books in the world, and you are helping add to that number. (With some help from Eileen and Krissie in this case.)

I can’t wait until the book comes out officially, and I can finally talk about how much fun it was to read!

  24. Penny June 25th, 2007 11:02 pm

If I had Dee’s powers I would like to change into a Snowy Owl because I think they are one of God’s most beautiful creatures. That would make me free to fly anywhere I wanted, to see all of the world…okay North America anyhow. If I couldn’t do that like Patmc I would like to change back into me when I was thinner.

  25. Alexa June 25th, 2007 11:51 pm

If I had Dee’s powers? I think I would manipulate the president into doing something useful for once in his life. Dare to dream, right? There are so many things I would want to do, even if I changed a few laws or just delivered justice to a child molester.

  26. Jenny Crusie June 25th, 2007 11:52 pm

I’d be a raccoon. There’s one that keeps coming up on my front porch and looking throught the window and she’s beautiful. And they’re nimble little suckers.

Either that or I’d be a dog that belonged to me. These guys have a great life.

  27. ubergeekmom June 26th, 2007 5:56 am

If I had Dee’s powers, I’d be the most successful spy/undercover cop ever because it would be soooo easy to infiltrate the bad guy’s group. In fact, I’m the reason James Bond was so successful dealing with SMERSH. I even played myself in the movies. That white cat — That was me!

  28. Theresa June 26th, 2007 7:23 am

The excerpts here on the bog give a hint of the sisters’ powers, for anyone who hasn’t been following this blog or hasn’t had a chance to get the book yet.

  29. Marcia in OK June 26th, 2007 9:48 am

Gee - I’d spend some time visiting with Lou. I’d like to be able to be the “fly on the wall”.

And, I’d also try out life as a tiger. All that strenght & beauty that isn’t easy to push around.

And then I’d take vacation as a dolphin cause they always look like they are having such fun.

2 hours til lunch when I can go get my book.

  30. minya June 26th, 2007 10:05 am

I think I’d turn in to a ghost cat and zip around my office and see how many people I can freak out by making them think they saw a cat and then rationalizing that it isn’t possible - there are no cats in the office. I like to think that would bring some amusement to everyone’s work life. Then I would find people with whom I could have staring contests - have you ever noticed that cats are great starers? Then I would create paintings in my animal form and market it as amazing modern art - wasn’t there a chimp whose paintings were selling in the hundreds of thousands? Then, after I’d made millions of dollars that way, I’d retire with my handsome man and curl up comfortably in the lap of luxury - how cat like is that!?

  31. Diane (TT) June 26th, 2007 10:42 am

Well, I think I’d be a sloth. Oh, wait, I guess I am. Anyway, a very peaceful life, just hanging from trees and sleeping a lot. I also like the idea of transforming into a different “me” (not that one), to see what it’s like to be petite or long-legged or something. But then I’d need to have even more clothes than I, in the packrat tradition, do. Hey, if I transformed into a bower bird, do you think I would suddenly become good at taking care of my surroundings and making them beautiful?

    I pick that!

  32. Lou June 26th, 2007 12:26 pm

Marcia - I’d love the company!!

I have the book… I have the book… WooHoo!!! I’ve gotten half-way through (lost a lot of sleep last night) and I’m loving it!!

And we - those of us on the blog who comment - were mentioned in the “Thank you” portion of the front of the book.

Thank you, Jenny, for thanking us for following the story on Well Behaved at All Times and offering encouragement! We love you too.

  33. Gail June 26th, 2007 3:47 pm

I’d try out being a dolphin just to find out what they do with brains so much bigger than ours. Also female dolphin have been known to hydroplane and that would be fun.

  34. Jill June 26th, 2007 4:10 pm

If I had Dee’s power I would be an animal psychiatrist and CEO of SPCA. then I would turn into a small whale and go play in the ocean. How deep can you go ?

  35. CC June 26th, 2007 7:23 pm

okay, went back and reread the blog post about Dee’s powers- and how she uses them for perspective in her art- I like the bird answers, flying high puts things in their place- I’m sneaky enough to like the small critters who can spy without being noticed- but I think one of my absolute favorite things to do is rough house with kids, and I have a special weakness for toddler/pre-school age, so I think I want to be a puppy, about 6 months old, with lots of energy and a silky coat and I want to go to library story time, and the park, and pre-school class and my friend’s day care and I want to play with kids and make them giggle and laugh and give puppy kisses-

On the other hand it seems that Dee manages to be both herself and the critter- so she can use her people mind and her critter bulk- I’m thinking a large bull would be a definite addition to one of our rural corners, grazing near the intersection should be enough to make a few speeding cars slow right down

  36. Anne Stuart June 26th, 2007 7:58 pm

I’d be a cat as well, but one in ancient Egypt, where I was worshipped and coddled and fed.
Come to think of it, my cats are worshipped and coddled and fed. So I guess I don’t have to time travel as well.

  37. Sheri June 26th, 2007 11:18 pm

I would be a dragon. Dragons are magical in themselves, and I have always been fascinated by them. I wouldn’t be a huge dragon, because that would be too scary. Instead I would like to be about the size of a horse or a large pony, with irridescent scales that changed colors in the sunlight. My wings would be translucent, almost gossamer (? sp) in appearance, with a golden sheen. My eyes would be a deep lavender, soft and wise, for dragons are of the Old Magic, didn’t you know. The claws on my feet would be moonstones, and if I breathed fire it would be purples and reds and I could control how hot it needed to be–crispy critter crackle or maybe just a little pffft! of warning.
Bad guys would fear me, but children would love me. I would take them on rides over the trees and we would play together on soft green grass under shady trees… (sigh) That’s what I would be if I had Dee’s powers.

  38. Jenifer June 27th, 2007 6:24 am

It seems Dee has the ability to turn into more than just one creature, but I haven’t finished the book yet, so not sure. But, I think I’d want to try out several different things.

I’d definitely want to turn into a giraffe and see what the world is like being so tall (I’m only 5′5″ in human form), and then maybe turn into a but (firefly, ladybug, something not gross) and see what it feels like to be so small and be able to go anywhere relatively unnoticed. And eavesdrop, as others have said.

But it would also be pretty cool to do things like be a search and rescue dog for a short period of time. I’d definitely want to try that out. They get amazing love and care from their handlers, and they get to do wonderful things for people who need them too.

  39. Christy H. June 27th, 2007 9:18 am

I’d be a humingbird ~ all that energy! And, being able to flit all around.

Or, like previously mentioned ~ the “fly on the wall”

  40. Mary Stella June 27th, 2007 10:31 am

I’d turn into a woman with a body like Catherine Zeta Jones. What? I’m playing by the rules. Dee transforms into animals but maintains her personality Humans are animals. :-) This counts. *sigh* Ok, this is cheating, but if I have to pick a non-human animal, I’d go with a dolphin. Smart, social, great swimmers and they’ll go for sex 365 days a year.

  41. gatedthistle June 27th, 2007 10:55 am

If I had Dee’s power, it would be a while before I settled into something useful to do with it. I would be this, and then that, and then another this, and see if I could be that! Maybe I would be a ghost and scare the bejeesez out of a certain shrub. Or maybe I would haunt the lawmakers.

  42. Eileen Dreyer June 28th, 2007 1:02 am

Mary Stella, There isn’t any rule that Dee couldn’t turn into another human. In fact, she obviously does, since she keeps turning into the mothers of the guys she tries to have sex with. So go for Zeta-Jones. Hopefully my daughter will have emailed me the picture of the butterfly needlepoint tomorrow(my camera’s on the fritz so I can post it with my own opinion on what I’d be.

  43. Mary Stella June 28th, 2007 12:52 pm

Thanks, Eileen. Zeta-Jones it is! Can’t wait to read the book since the wonderful rackers in the Florida Keys managed to get it into the Publix Supermarkets this week. I snapped up my copy and will dive into it tonight!

  44. Courtney June 28th, 2007 2:10 pm

I got absolutely NO sleep last night…but I finished the book! Loved, loved, loved it!

Let’s see…if I had Dee’s magic, I would transform myself into a tiger, because I’ve always thought of them as the sexiest, most-bad-ass creatures around. (Love when Pywackt transforms back into a tiger btw.) Then I think I’d become just a regular ole cat, because-Did I mention I didn’t get ANY sleep last night because of Some People’s Book?–Because, I’ve never been one of those people who could take cat naps, and I’m insanely jealous. Finally, I’d transform into a hawk so that I could soar high above everything for awhile. A long, long while.

  45. RandomRanter June 28th, 2007 2:39 pm

Well, I always say that if I’m really good in this life, I’ll get to come back as a pampered house-cat. But I could see advantages to being a cat now, to escape - as someone said above - and also to check out stuff and people. It would be a very easy way to find out if they really were cat people.

  46. J. June 28th, 2007 9:42 pm

I’d love to be a fly on the wall in many different places. But with my luck, there’d be a handy dandy flyswatter nearby.
Serves me right for being nosey.

Seriously though? A magnificantly majestic, grand, utterly beautiful cheetah. Run like the wind. Master of none. Gorgeous. Free.

    Yeah, I’d like that.

  47. Kimberly June 29th, 2007 2:20 am

Well, you can add me to the “fly on the wall” club, but I think I’d also like to shift into an otter, because they seem to have the most fun. Sea otters are my faves, but just about any otter likes to have a good time.

  48. Jennifer Talty June 29th, 2007 11:09 am

If I had Dee’s power - I’d be a fly on the wall whenever possible.

  49. Phyllis L July 2nd, 2007 10:14 am

Whoohooo, I bought my copy on Friday. I am really enjoying it. While Dee loves to fly, I would love to be a big cat. All those wonderful strong graceful muscles.

  50. blade's kiss July 4th, 2007 12:56 pm

I would love to shape shift. I have read many books on it and find it very cool. I am pagan and follow the goddess bastet, who is a cat so I am very bonded to animals. I am also a reiki master who does most of my healing work on pets…I think it would be very cool just to see what they do threw their eyes. I think animals have so much to offer us, its just getting or training us to listen lol…
